Alrighty loyal readers, this is the last entry in the Filmable Chronicles of the 2024/2025 series. If you’ve been with us since the first, we have been sharing antics from our epic VIFF party to learning how to give better feedback, we accomplished a lot, and are proud to share with you all.
In our sixth chronicle in this series, let’s take a look at the Filmable Critical Feedback Workshop!
TLDR:
We ALL need to get better at giving feedback, but how does one actually do it in an encouraging way?
We turned to Brian Postalian and Joyce Rosario, two facilitators of a method called “Critical Response Protocol”. They hosted a day-long workshop for 25 folks eager to learn how to constructively critique and boy… did. we. learn. a. lot.
Thank you to Creative BC and Boldly for supporting this workshop.
THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT
Ahhhh giving feedback. The curse and the blessing of the arts. A crucial aspect to pushing the work to be its best, but also endlessly frustrating if no one can see your vision. In BC, we avoid confrontation like the plague and feedback tends to be generously positive. But does that help us make the strongest work?
We want to change that! Let’s create a culture around trusted constructive feedback that pushes the work further and gives the West Coast a reputation for strong creative vision.
But how do we do that? It’s all in knowing how to deliver and receive the message.
The answers? Critical Response Process. But srsly… WTF is that??
CRP is a process of using questions to guide discussion around the work, gives the power to the artists to own the critique and enhances communication throughout all collaborators.
Brian Postalian and Joyce Rosario are trained in the art of this method of giving feedback and hosted a day-long workshop at the Boldly Studio with 25 filmmakers who each recognized the value of incorporating this technique into their work. All of them saw how these skills could yield stronger creative outcomes and deepen their collaborative relationships.
Keep an eye out for future Critical Feedback Workshops! Based on the demand, we will definitely be offering more.
