No doubt you are a devoted Filmable Chronicle reader and know that we have been chronicling our antics from the Filmable 2024/2025 series. From our epic VIFF party to learning how to give better feedback, we accomplished a lot, and are proud to share with you all.
In our fifth chronicle in this series, let’s take a look at the Filmable Cinematography Workshop!
TLDR:
We’ve heard from members in the community that there are very few hands-cinematography workshops available for non-union folks. And we thought… heck. Let’s change that.
On a blustery Saturday in January, twenty-five keen eyed cinematographers gathered at Franklin Studios to learn from the DOP G.O.A.T, Kaayla Whachell.
Thank you to Creative BC and Franklin Studios for supporting this workshop.
THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT
The Director of Photography - a role that encompasses such a deep amount of technical expertise, creative vision and inspiring leadership it’s amazing one human can master it all. Mentorship and access to workshops are crucial for aspiring cinematographers and yet in the non-union indie world, there are very few opportunities to learn.
We approached our pals at Franklin Studios to see if they would be interested in opening up their exquisite space to a group of eager DOPs looking to play with some cameras and lights. By jove, it was an immediate yes. The Franklin Studios team are community builders in their own right, and saw the need for this type of workshop - t’was indeed a no-brainer.
So, studio? Check. Creative BC helping us out with some funds? Check. Now we just need to convince a DOP to lend us their expertise.
Of course, our first call was to the G.O.A.T of indie cinematography…. KAAYLA WHACHELL. A talented DOP with an impressive track record under her belt, a leader at the Canadian Society of Cinematographers and a thoughtful educator in the art of cinematography, Kaayla was enthusiastic to facilitate the workshop and brought a structured, measured and insightful approach to the lesson plan.
After nearly 50 amazing applications, we narrowed down the participants to 25 folks who were at the right point in their careers to maximize this workshop. The experience was a thorough blend of theoretical and hands-on lighting practice, and all who participated told us they left feeling like they learned something.
Which…. Is the whole idea, ain’t it? A resounding success in our books!
